STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves dropped the second match of their home opening weekend on Saturday as they were bested 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17) by Hofstra.
Ella Sanders topped 20 kills for the second time this season as they paced the team with 21, as well as leading the way in digs with 15 for a double-double. Damisi Osibodu had another strong night at the net, heading up the Seawolves with eight total blocks.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Just like Friday's match, both teams were neck-and-neck throughout the first as neither one took a lead larger than three points until the end of the frame. The Seawolves' elite defense at the net continued to keep the team in it as they racked up five blocks, four of which came from Osibodu. Later in the set, trailing by just one, Stony Brook went on a 6-1 run late to go up 23-17 thanks to a pair of aces from Taryn Su. Su would go on to finish off the set with a setter dump.
SET 2 | Tied 5-5 out of the gate, this time it was Hofstra who went on a run, scoring 10 of the next 14 to take a 15-9 lead into the media timeout. Lei Lasike paced the offense early on with three kills, bringing her total up to six already on the night. The Seawolves were able to cut into the Pride's lead out of the break, as Sanders recorded another four kills to make it a three-point game at 22-19. Despite the effort, though, Hofstra was just able to hang on to even up the night with a 25-23 win.
SET 3 | Osibodu got off to a blistering start in the third, quickly picking up three kills and another block to keep it tied up at 10-10. A 7-0 Hofstra run, however, soon blew the set wide open as the Seawolves found themselves down 17-10. Sanders did manage to add four more kills to her tally, while Avari Amstutz picked up back-to-back points to cut the deficit down to 24-22, but ultimately Hofstra was just able to hang on for set point.
SET 4 | Despite another four kills from Sanders, Stony Brook again found itself down 15-10 at the midway point. The deficit would only grow out of the timeout as the Seawolves were held to four more kills in the set as they were downed 25-17.
Notable Stats
- Sanders now has six double-doubles on the season and 18 in her career.
- Likewise, Rayanne Wheat recorded her second double-double of the season after ending the night with 20 assists and 11 digs.
- Osibodu increased her streak to five consecutive matches with at least seven blocks.
