Jackie Fernandez capped off an outstanding performance by serving for the final two points of the match in leading Central Connecticut (4-12) to a 14-16, 15-10, 13-15, 15-10, 16-14 win over Stony Brook (5-11) Friday night at the USB Sports Complex. It was the second straight win for Central Connecticut over the Seawolves this season as the Blue Devils beat the Seawolves, 3-2, last Friday night in New Britain.
Fernandez posted a double-double with 22 kills and 18 digs - both career-highs in leading the Blue Devils in both categories. Five of her kills came in the pivotal game five where the Blue Devils fended off match point. The two teams traded points with the Blue Devils tying the match at 13-13. The Seawolves took a 14-13 lead and served for the match on Goldsmith's kill but Beth Holycross followed with a kill that gave the Blue Devils serve for good. Kelli Tonkovich put a ball down the line and Holly Richardson closed the match with a kill.
It was the third win in five matches for Central Connecticut, who had five players in double figures. Sara Winchell posted a triple-double with 11 kills, 16 digs, and 44 assists. Holycross added the third double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
The loss spoiled outstanding performances from Debra Falkenberg, Rachel Goldsmith and Alison Fields. Falkenberg registed 15 kills and 15 digs, Goldsmith had 17 kills and 19 digs and Fields had 59 assists and 11 digs.
The Seawolves head to Marist on Wednesday night for a 7:00 match.
