Stony Brook, NY -
Junior Debra Falkenberg collected career-highs with 22 kills and 16 digs, leading Stony Brook to a 15-10, 7-15, 14-16, 15-12, 15-5 win over Buffalo Wednesday night at the USB Sports Complex. It was the third win in four matches for Stony Brook (12-19) and the 18th straight loss for Buffalo (4-27).
With the match tied at two-games apiece, the Seawolves dominated game five, taking an 8-3 lead - seven points coming off the serve of Rachel Goldsmith. The Seawolves cruised from there to post their 12th win of the season.
The Seawolves won 15-10 in game one, building a 9-2 lead while holding off a late Buffalo charge. The Bulls built an 8-3 lead to start game two before Stony Brook came back to make it 8-6. However, the Bulls pulled away with the next six points and won the game on one of Lindsay Makitosh's team-leading 12 kills.
Stony Brook took an 8-3 advantage in game three on a Jaime O'Connor kill, but Buffalo rallied with nine of the next 12 points and led 12-10. The Seawolves came back thanks to a pair of attack errors and a kill from Falkenberg and led, 14-12. But Buffalo answered with the last four points to win the game, taking control on a Matikosh kill and service ace.
It looked as though the Bulls would finish the match off in game four, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Falkenberg registered three straight kills during a 6-3 run to take a 9-8 lead. The teams went back-and-forth until one of Cynthia Orengo's seven blocks gave the Pack a 14-12 lead. Orengo collected a kill on game point - one of a career-high 17 on the night to give Stony Brook the come-from-behind game four win to force the deciding game five.
Five different Seawolves had double-digit digs totals, led by Falkenberg's 16. Goldsmith had 15 digs and Westing, O'Connor and Gordon had 13 each. Freshman setter Alison Fields had 57 assists.
Stony Brook finishes off its season tomorrow night against Albany at 5:00 p.m.
