Stony Brook used an 18-4 run over a span of 9:47 in the second half, erasing a 15-point deficit to defeat American (2-7), 80-70, Monday night at the USB Sports Complex. Jessica Burch collected 12 points, eight assists and nine steals in the victory - all season-highs.
Tied at 18-18 for the fourth time in the half, American used a 13-4 run over 4:07 to take a 31-22 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first half. Seven of the 13 points came off free throws, where the Eagles hit 12-of-16 in the first 20 minutes. Kelli Cofield's jumper and Maggie Triggs' three-pointer cut the advantage to 31-27, but Maria Werries lay-up, Erin Brady's free throw and Steinman's lay-up as time expired put the lead at 36-27. American buried 12-of-20 shots from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles extended the lead to 42-27 in the first 2:03 of the second half on a Werries lay-up, a Jina Lewis jumper and an Erin Brady lay-up.
Theresa LoParrino's three-pointer began the run as the Seawolves outscored the Eagles, 53-28, over the last 17:57. Burch sparked the Pack during the run with 10 points, five assists and six steals. She tied the school record for steals in a game for the second time during her career, collecting nine.
Burch was helped by Kelli Cofield's eight points and 13 rebounds and Sherry Jordan's 20 points and five rebounds. Two other players scored in double figures with Erika Shipley had 11 points and Theresa LoParrino collected 12.
Five American players scored in double figures, led by Erin Brady's 18 points, five steals and five assists.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams and the first time Stony Brook has faced a team from the Colonial Conference.
The Seawolves take on Monmouth Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. inside the USB Sports Complex.
