Junior All-American Keith Cromwell and junior attackman Scott Massey each scored five goals as the Rutgers men's lacrosse team posted a 13-10 victory over Stony Brook in the Knights' first-ever ECAC Lacrosse victory.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak as Rutgers improved to 2-6 on the season, 1-3 in conference play. Stony Brook fell to 2-8, 0-4 in the ECAC.
The Scarelet Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead before tallies by Dominic D'Orazio and Kevin Pall drew Stony Brook within 3-2 at the end of one quarter. Rutgers took control in the second quarter, outscoring the redshirts 5-1 to take an 8-3 lead into the break. Cromwell continued Rutgers run in the third as the Scarlet Knights built an 11-4 lead with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter.
Matt Campolettano sparked the Stony Brook comeback at 3:37 of the third as the Seawolves scored five straight goals capped by Tris Gillens' tally with 6:40 remaining to trim Rutgers lead to 11-9. However, Cromwell answered for Rutgers, scoring his fifth goal of the game less than two minutes later to halt Stony Brook's run as the Scarlet Knights held on for the win.
John Dobias made nine saves for Stony Brook which returns home to face Ohio State on Sunday. Face-off is 1:00 p.m.
