The Stony Brook Seawolves had not scored a single point in the first quarter in its first three games. On Saturday, the Seawolves scored three touchdowns in the first stanza en route to a 48-21 win over Sacred Heart. It was the most points by the Seawolves on the road since 1996 when Stony Brook beat Central Connecticut, 52-7.
Ralph Menendez led the charge with 207 yards on the ground and three touchdowns - the
most since Bobby Cane's three rushing scores in 1996. Brian Stanley threw for two touchdowns and Lucas Niskanen caught two in Stony Brook's seventh win over the Pioneers in the teams' seven meeting.
The Seawolves were never threatened, scoring on three of its first four possessions of the
day. Menendez scored on long touchdown runs to cap off two of the three possessions,
running 41 yards to open the scoring and closed out the first quarter with a career-long
74-yard scamper. In-between, Stanley connected with Niskanen on a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Niskanen and Menendez were responsible for both second quarter scores for the scarlet and
grey. Niskanen caught a 19-yard pass for a touchdown and Menendez ran 18-yards for a
score to close out the first half with the Seawolves holding a 35-0 lead.
James Kandziolka capped off a second half opening drive with a career-long 45 -yard field
goal and added a a 23-yarder midway through the fourth quarter to salt the game away.
The Seawolves defense dominated all game long, forcing three turnovers and seven punts
by the Pioneers. Michael Spizzo and John Kostkowicz each had 10 tackles and Kostkowicz had 1.5 sacks for Stony Brook, who found the Pioneers' quarterback for a loss four different times.
