Senior Jenny Payne's eighth-place individual finish at the METS Championships on Friday led the Stony Brook women's cross country team to sixth place overall, three slots better than they finished last season.
Payne recorded a time of 19:39 in the 5K to help Stony Brook finish sixth of 15 teams.
On the men's side, Stony Brook finished ninth of 15 teams overall, an improvement over the 11th-place finish they achieved last season. Senior Dave deWolfe was the top runner for Stony Brook, placing 18th in the 8000m with a time of 27:17.
Fairleigh Dickinson captured the men's title, while Columbia won the women's crown.
The Seawolves return to action on October 14 when they compete at the St. John's Invitational.
