Junior center Jill George scored 17 points and eight rebounds, leading Stony Brook (16-10) to its first win over Albany (5-21) in five games, 56-54, Saturday afternoon at the USB Sports Complex in front of a season-high 1764 fans. Stony Brook finished the home season with a 13-1 mark.
In a nip-and-tuck affair, Stony Brook took a 53-48 lead with 1:38 to go on a Theresa LoParrino free throw. Albany's Chris Gray scored her only three points of the night on a rainbow three-pointer on the Great Danes' next possession, cutting the lead to 53-51 with 1:25 remaining.
Albany had a chance to tie the game down 54-51, but Danielle DeGiorgio picked off an errant pass in the backcourt with :31 remaining, forcing Albany to foul. The Seawolves missed three of its next four free throws and Albany's Cara Caffell hit 1-of-2 free throws with :17 remaining to close to 54-52. LoParrino closed Stony Brook's scoring with a pair of free throws to make it 56-52 with :14 remaining.
Jill George scored six of Stony Brook's first seven points as Stony Brook led early, 7-2. Albany went on an 18-8 run and took a 20-15 lead - its biggest of the game. The teams remained within three points of each other and the Seawolves held a 28-27 lead at the half.
Liz Tucker's three points ignited a 5-0 run to start the second half for the Great Danes as they led 32-28 with 18:33 left. George's lay-up with 14:22 left gave Stony Brook the lead for good at 39-37. LoParrino's jumper gave Stony Brook its largest lead of the game at 52-46 with 3:01 remaining.
LoParrino finished with 16 points - the sixth straight game in which she has scored in double figures. Danielle DeGiorgio had a career-high 13 points.
Albany was led by Tucker's 18 points. Marie Connors posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Kathryn Hemlock had 12 points.
The meeting marked the 23rd between the two teams with Albany holding a 12-11 advantage.
Stony Brook heads to Towson Monday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
