Columbia used a 13-2 second half run and another 7-0 run to close the game to defeat Stony Brook, 69-60, Tuesday night at Levien Gymnasium. Shawnee Pickney led the Lions with 22 points and 15 rebounds, helping hand Stony Brook its ninth road loss of the season.
Stony Brook's biggest lead of the second half was 12 points, the last coming on Jessica Burch's lay-up to make it 51-39 with 12:27 remaining. The Lions countered with 30 of the game' s final 39 points. Pickney scored eight during the run that started with a Cassie Beirele lay-up and and ended with a Katie Day jumper. Day scored a season-high 16 points in the win.
Within the 30-9 run, the Lions scored 11 straight points to close to 51-50 with 7:39 left on a Patricia Kern bucket. The Lions took their first lead since early in the first half as Kern hit a pair of free throws with 6:32 to go.
The lead changed hands five more times until Megan O'Neill's three-pointer made the score 62-59 in favor of the Lions. It is a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
Sherry Jordan had a chance to draw Stony Brook to within two with a steal and a fast break, but was called on a charge - her fifth foul of the game. The Seawolves bench was whistled for a technical foul on the call with 1:15 left.
Kern hit both technical free throws and Pickney hit a basket on the ensuing possession to put the game out of reach.
The Seawolves led by as many as 13 points in the game - taking a 25-12 lead with 9:03 to go in the first half.
Stony Brook was hindered by foul trouble throughout the game. Jordan was whistled for three fouls in the first 1:29 of the game. She picked up her fourth foul just :29 into the second half. George was whistled for her fourth foul with 14 minutes left and Jessica Burch fouled out with 3:55 left.
Theresa LoParrino led the Seawolves with 19 points and George had 15. Danielle DeGiorgio had a team-high seven rebounds.
