Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Mike Dworczyk's goal with 2:55 remaining proved to be the gamewinner as Stony Brook stunned No. 16 UMBC, 10-9, before 856 sun-drenched fans at Seawolves Field Saturday afternoon. The win marked Stony Brook's first over a Top 20 opponent in four years and its first ever ECAC Lacrosse League victory since conference play began a year ago. Stony Brook had lost its first 10 conference games heading into today's action.
Kevin Pall, the nation's leading scorer, got Stony Brook rolling early on as he took a feed from Dworczyk off the opening face-off to score the first of his three goals 16 seconds into the game. Jon Tompkins then scored at the 10:42 mark and SB had a 2-0 lead.
UMBC sliced the lead to 2-1 in the second quarter on a goal from Charlie Gibson before Jesse Foss answered for Stony Brook to make it a 3-1 game. Adam Shiley's goal with 6:18 left in the second got UMBC within 3-2 but again SB extended the lead to two goals on an unassisted tally from Tris Gillen. Late in the quarter, the Seawolves mishandled a clear attempt and UMBC's Josh Hahn picked up the loose ball in front of the Stony Brook net and put it home to cut the lead to 4-3. Pall extended the lead to 5-3 with 1:49 left before halftime, taking a pass from George LaFlare and bouncing it by Steve Cusa.
The Retrievers came out and scored the first two goals of the third quarter to knot the game at five but again Stony Brook responded quickly. Tompkins netted his second goal of the game at 5:31 of the third quarter and Pall connected on his third only 17 seconds later and Stony Brook had a 7-5 lead as the third quarter came to an end.
Pall's third goal gave him 49 for the season which set a new Stony Brook record for goals in a season, shattering the old mark of 48 that John Warrack set in 1985. He has scored at least two goals in every game this season and has 10 hat tricks on the year.
Stony Brook continued its surge early in the fourth as LaFlare found the net 40 seconds into the period for an 8-5 lead. Just when it looked like Stony Brook was in control, John Harasym took over for the Retrievers. Harasym, returning to the lineup after missing four games due to a hamstring injury, scored four straight goals in the span of 3:40. His final goal came at the 10:09 mark and UMBC had its first lead of the game at 9-8. His four goals was a single-game career high.
However, the Seawolves would not be denied this afternoon. After killing a penalty, the Seawolves quickly moved up the field where Pall found Matt Campolettano who hit the upper corner of the net, tying the game at nine with 7:24 to go.
Just over four minutes later, Stony Brook struck again after killing off a penalty when Dworczyk scooped up a groundball with a long pole and raced the length of the field to whip a shot past Cusa for the game-winning goal.
Stony Brook, which improved to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play, last defeated a ranked opponent in 1997 when it downed the No. 17 Hartford Hawks in overtime by the same score of 10-9.
Steve Armsworthy made 11 stops in net for Stony Brook to earn the win while Cusa made 13 saves for UMBC which fell to 5-6 on the year, 2-4 in ECAC play.
Stony Brook is concludes the 2001 season next Saturday against ECAC rival Penn State. Face-off is 1:00 p.m.
