Buffalo Posts 3-1 Win Over Seawolves In Volleyball

Buffalo, NY - Stony Brook (0-1) got out to a strong start winning game one, but lost the final three games en route to a 24-30, 30-28, 30-24, 30-28 loss to Buffalo (1-0) Friday night at the Buffalo Morgan Classic.

The Seawolves got six kills and three digs in game one from Rachel Goldsmith and led from start to finish. The Seawolves got 10 assists from freshman setter Julie Zub, part of a 39-assist performance in her collegiate debut.

Buffalo took game two, capitalizing on Stony Brook's poor hitting performance. The Seawolves had 13 kills and 13 errors in 42 attempts (.000), allowing the Bulls to take the game, 30-28. Stony Brook countered in game 3 by hitting .219, but committed nine service receive errors, allowing the Bulls to take 2-1 lead with the 30-24 game victory.

It looked as though the match was over midway through game four. Buffalo assumed a 21-11 lead. Following a timeout, the Seawolves ran off 17 of the next 24 points to tie the game at 28-28. The run was sparked by Valerie Maloy, who had four of her nine kills. However, Buffalo earned a point on a sideout and closed the match on serve for the game and match victory.

The Seawoles lost for just the second time in its last eight season openers.

Senior Debra Falkenberg had 12 kills and 10 digs and Danielle MacKnight had one block solo and five block assists.

The Seawolves take on Canisius Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and battle with St. John's at 3:00 p.m.
