Volleyball Salvages Weekend With Victory Over CCSU

New Britain, NY -- - Jaime O'Connor earned all-tournament team honors and Stony Brook salvaged its weekend with a victory over Central Connecticut Saturday at the CCSU Invitational. The Seawolves (7-9) went 1-2 on the weekend, losing to Columbia (3-0) and Rider (3-1).

CCSU took control of the match in game one, using a 17-10 kills advantage while capitalizing on Stony Brook's 12 hitting errors to earn a 32-30 win. Behind LaToya Byerly's nine kills, the Seawolves came back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 32-30 win. The Seawolves added to the momentum, crusising to a 30-20 game three win behind Rachel Golsmith's seven kills and Byerly's five digs. CCSU hit -.061 in the game, committing 10 errors in 33 attempts. Byerly led the assault in game four again with five of Stony Brook's 11 kills in leading the team to a 30-19 game win and match victory.

Byerly finished with a career-high 19 kills and also chipped in with eight digs. Susanne Westing had 13 digs in anchoring Stony Brook's defense. Goldsmith and Falkenberg also had 13 kills as the Seawolves snapped a two-match losing streak to the Blue Devils.

O'Connor posted a brilliant performance in Stony Brook's 30-15, 30-25, 27-30, 32-30 loss to Rider. Nine of her kills came in the 30-27 game three win, where she hit .467, committing two errors in 15 attempts.

Stony Brook held a 23-18 advantage in game four, but allowed the Broncs to tie the game at 29-29 and went on to victory. The Seawolves hit .326 in the game, but went on to lose the match for the fifth time in its last six.

The Seawolves enter America East conference play against Hartford Tuesday at the SBU Sports Complex at 5:00 p.m.
