New Hampshire (4-11, 1-3) at Stony Brook (3-14, 2-4) Game Notes
Backdrop: Stony Brook looks for its first two-game win streak as it plays host to America East foe New Hampshire. The Seawolves are 2-1 in their three home games this year.
Last Time Out: D.J. Munir's three-pointer with 1:24 to go gave Stony Brook a 62-60 lead and the Seawolves held off the Bearcats for a 66-62 win on Tuesday night to earn their first road win of the season. Munir was outstanding again with 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. JonPaul Kobryn added a career-high 19 points.
About the Wildcats: New Hampshire is coming off a loss to Vermont on Monday night which dropped their record to 4-11, 1-3 in conference play.
Stony Brook Vs. New Hampshire: Stony Brook holds a 1-0 edge against the Wildcats and a 3-8 record vs. America East teams since 1998-99. The Seawolves earned the one win last year with a 67-60 win in Durham, N.H. Leon Brisport led the way for SB with 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Forward Chris Brown leads the America East in rebounding while Austin Ganly is one of the league's top scorers.
D.J. Spins A Good Tune: D.J. Munir is still the engine that makes Stony Brook's offense run. He has scored 20 points or more on five occasions and has one 30-point effort to his credit. He ranks among the top five in the America East in three offensive categories: free throw shooting (1st), scoring (4th) and assists (5th).
Breaking the Jinx
The Seawolves win over Binghamton snapped a 13-game road losing streak. Stony Brook had lost 15 consecutive games away from home before the win over the Bearcats
Home Sweet Home: The Seawolves have won 14 of their last 15 home games.
19 For His Nineteenth: How about this? Freshman JonPaul Kobryn celebrated his 19th birthday on Tuesday night by scoring a career-high 19 points against the Bearcats, going 6-9 from the floor and hitting seven of 10 free throws. JPK has been on fire lately, scoring in double figures in three of his last four and five of his last seven games. He is averaging 13.3 points per game over his last three.
He has slowly emerged as SB's top field goal percentage guy, he now is shooting 54.5 percent from the field and entered the week fourth in the America East in that category.
Defending The Three: Defending the three will be critical tonight as the Wildcats lead the conference in three-pointers made at 7.9 per game.
New Additions: Stony Brook welcomed three transfers to the roster this week in Cori Spencer, John Bucaro and Tyrone Stalling.. Headlining the trio is 6-7, 230-pound forward Cori Spencer who spent the previous year-and-a-half at Fordham. The former Peekskill HS standout played for one season with current Los Angeles Clipper and former Duke Blue Devil Elton Brand at Peekskill. Following high school, he went on to play one season at Bridgton Academy in Maine with current Seawolf D.J. Munir. At Bridgton he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game to earn first team All-New England Prep honors and was later named honorable mention All-America by Blue Ribbon and rated as one of the Top 125 recruits in the nation by Recruiting Beat.
Bucaro, a 6-4, 190-pound shooting guard, was a three-time All-League selection for St. Anthony's High School on Long Island before heading to Holy Cross. He appeared in 10 games as a freshman with the Crusaders.
Stallings also joins the Seawolves from Fordham. A 6-3, 190-pound point guard will add depth to Stony Brook's backcourt.
All three players become eligible to compete for SB following the conclusion of the 2002 fall semester. Spencer and Bucaro will have two-and-a-half years of eligibility remaining while Stallings will have a year-and-a-half.
Bobbleheads Are Coming: Be sure to be on hand for all the exciting action for Stony Brook's bobblehead Seawolves promotion in February and March. On February 21st, the first 500 fans at attend the men's basketball game against Boston University will receive a free Seawolf bobblehead doll courtesy of Fleet Bank.
The first 500 fans to attend women's home finale on March 2 against Vermont will also receive the Seawolf bobblehead doll.
We Like Mike: Another freshman has made a solid contribution for SB. Mike Orfini is averaging 6.8 points per game and is averaging 7.5 points in conference play. He also ranks seventh in the America East in steals (1.5).
