Freshman Leonora Joy captured the women's individual title at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday.
Joy, who narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships, covered the 5K course in 17:43.1, an impressive 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Sheila Klick of La Salle. Joy becomes the first Stony Brook athlete to win an ECAC title at the Division I level.
Junior Jackie Nunez also turned in an outstanding performance, finishing seventh in 18:17.6.
Junior Dale Summerville recorded the best finish for Stony Brook in the men's IC4A Championship, placing 14th in the five-mile race with a time of 26:23.7. Freshman Brian Farrell finished in the No. 22 spot, recording a time of 26:43.0.
