UMBC (5-6) outscored visiting Stony Brook (8-6), 7-0, in the second
quarter and went on to post an 11-3 non-conference victory over the
Seawolves at UMBC Stadium.
With the score tied at 1-1 after fifteen minutes, UMBC scored three
times the first 3:36 of the second quarter. Sophomores Mac Chase and
Franklin Berry and freshman Travis Tomczak all tallied in that span,
followed by back-to-back scores by Joey Kestermann and Leigh DiPace at
6:43 and 6:58 respectively. Chase scored an extra-man goal at 13:03, and
Matt Gallagher gave UMBC its seventh goal of the quarter on a rebound at
the 14:04 mark.
UMBC netminders Tim Flanagan (9 saves) and Kevin Cepelak (4 saves)
combined for 13 saves in halting the Stony Brook attack. Stony Brook
starter Steve Armsworthy made 7 saves and allowed 10 of UMBC's 11 goals
in 56 minutes of action.
Chase, Kestermann, DiPace, and Berry each scored twice for UMBC, which
won its second straight. UMBC held USB's Kevin Pall, the nation's
seventh leading scorer to one goal. Denis Scannell and Steve Conlon
added the other goals for the Seawolves.
The Retriever win avenged last season's 10-9 loss at Stony Brook. UMBC
won 12 of 18 face-offs against the second-best face-off team (63.8%) in
the nation entering this week.
