Men's Basketball Announces 2002-03 Schedule

Aug. 19, 2002

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University has announced its 2002-03 regular season basketball schedule, a 27-game slate that features 16 America East matchups and 11 non-conference games. The 11-game non-conference schedule showcases three Big East teams, two of which advanced to the 2002 NCAA tournament in St. John's and Boston College.

"This year's schedule is well balanced with 15 home games," stated Macarchuk. "In addition, we think that having our entire core group returning with a year of experience will help our young team." The Seawolves return all five starters this season, including All-America East guard D.J. Munir who led the Seawolves with over 17 points per game last season. Ten letterwinners return in 2002-03 and the Seawolves will also welcome the arrival of three transfers and two freshmen this season.

Stony Brook opens it season at home against Sacred Heart of Saturday, Nov. 23 and then travels to St. John's for a Tuesday, Nov. 26 matchup, the fourth straight year that the two teams have met and the third consecutive matchup at SJU's Alumni Hall. Harvard comes to town on Saturday, Nov. 30 before the Seawolves host Rhode Island College (Dec. 2) and then visit Columbia on December 4. Three of the next five games are at home with Army (Dec. 12), Hofstra (Dec. 21) and Lehigh (Dec. 23). On December 15, the Seawolves take on Boston College for the first time in their history in Chestnut Hill.

The final contest before conference play begins will be a New Year's Eve afternoon rumble with Seton Hall at the Continental Airlines Arena on December 31.

As for the conference schedule, Stony Brook's America East slate begins on the road against the defending regular season champion Vermont Catamounts on Jan. 4. The Seawolves have one non-conference game remaining after conference play begins as they host Centenary College on Jan. 29. The regular season comes to a close at home against New Hampshire on March 2.

The America East tournament opens with first round games at Boston University on March 9 with the top eight teams qualifying for postseason play. Semifinal games will be played the following day with the championship game to take place at the highest remaining seed on March 15.
