Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Stony Brook volleyball team (12-7) closed the 2002 Central Connecticut State University Invitational in impressive fashion by sealing second place in the tournament thanks to yet another comeback win, this one coming over Central Connecticut.

The host Blue Devils (5-10) and Stony Brook met in the third match of the day, with CCSU rolling out to a 9-0 lead in the first game. Central Connecticut increased the lead to 11-1 and eventually took game one, 30-20. Stony Brook would not be denied its 12th win of the season and rebounded by sweeping the following three game, 30-26, 30-21 and 30-28.

The comeback was spiked by the combination of sophomore Danielle MacKnight (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas). MacKnight led Stony Brook with 13 kills backed up by Byerly's double-double that consisted of 12 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore setter Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) totalled 44 assists, a pair of service aces and a dozen digs.

The Blue Devil offense was led by 18 kills each from Jennifer Cote and freshman outside hitter Chantelle Bowden.

In addition to the team success, an individual from the Seawolves was awarded all-tournament honors. MacKnight scored a spot on the all-tournament team thanks to her performance throughout the weekend.

The volleyball team is off until Saturday when they travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to participate in a tournament with Wagner College and Long Island University. The LIU match is scheduled for 1 p.m. start time on Saturday and the Wagner matchup is ready for a 3 p.m. start.
