Cross Country Opens In Strong Fashion At Stony Brook Invitational

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook cross country team got its 2002 season off to a strong start as the women's team took four of the top five finishes to capture first place at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday.

Stony Brook senior Jenny Payne won the individual title with a time of 18:42 in the 5K, while sophomore Laura Hixson and junior Jackie Nunez were second and third, respectively. Hixson ran the race in 19:47 while Nunez posted a time of 19:54. Senior Jackie Berman took fifth place, and senior Patty Gregory came in 10th to complete the scoring for the Seawolves.

The women's team easily won the overall title with 21 points. Monmouth finished in second place with 87 points.

The men's team was led by junior Dale Summerville, who placed ninth with a time of 16:40. Freshman Brian Farrell wasn't far behind, finishing in 11th place with a time of 16:44.

The men's team finished fourth of eight teams overall.

Iona, ranked No. 21 in the country, won the overall title with 22 points, and the Gaels' Mark Smyth won the individual title, recording a time of 15:58 in the 5K.

The Seawolves return to action on Sept. 21 when they compete at the Central Connecticut State University Invitational.
