Stony Brook, N.Y.-Julie Sailer's 15 points led three players in double-digits for Delaware as they defeated the Stony Brook women's basketball team 67-58 on Tuesday evening at the SBU Sports Complex. Theresa LoParrino scored a team-high 14 points for the Seawolves in the loss. Stony Brook is now 0-2 on the season, while Delaware improved its record to 1-1.
The Seawolves battled with Delaware for most of the second half and cut the lead to five points on a three pointer by Kelly Watson with 1:28 to play. Delaware pushed the lead to seven on a pair of free throws by Amanda Blackstone, but Danyelle Ingram cut the lead back down to five as she sank two shots of her own from the foul line with 38 seconds remaining. A layup by Blackstone put the Fightin' Blue Hens back up by seven and put the game out of reach.
Stony Brook played even with Delaware in the first half, taking advantage of 12 turnovers to keep within four points at the break, 33-29. LoParrino scored seven of her 14 points in the first half, draining two three pointers.
The Seawolves had a two-point advantage at 16-14 with 9:40 remaining in the half before Delaware went on an 8-0 run over the next 3:27 to take a 22-16 lead. Stony Brook tied the score a 29 apiece on a Stephanie Barlett layup with 1:28 to play before Delaware scored the final four points of the period to take a four-point lead into the locker room.
Sailer's 15 points led all scorers as she knocked down 7-of-10 free throws, all of which came in the first half. Tiffany Young and Tiara Malcolm each chipped in 13 points for Delaware.
Mykeema Ford scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Ingram and Barlett each scored eight points for the Seawolves. Bojana Bogetic and Jessica Smith led Stony Brook with seven rebounds apiece.
Stony Brook is back in action on Friday evening against St. Louis in the Coca-Cola Billiken Classic at 6:00 p.m. central time.
