Final Stats

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - Grady Reynolds scored a career-high 26 points on 13-for-17 shooting from the field and St. John's defeated Stony Brook 72-61 on Saturday night for its first victory of the season.

Freshman Daryll Hill replaced suspended senior Willie Shaw in the lineup and had five points. Elijah Ingram scored 15 and Andre Stanley added 13 for the Red Storm (1-2), who have won all five games in the series.

Shaw was suspended indefinitely after being arrested last Tuesday for possession of marijuana. It was the second offense for the senior, who was also suspended for four games at the end of the 2001-02 season for testing positive for marijuana use.

D.J. Munir scored 15 points and Cori Spencer added 12 for the Seawolves (1-3), who trailed 35-33 at halftime.

The Seawolves closed within one point at 50-49 on a jumper by Mike Orfini at 10:21 of the second half. But Ingram scored six points in an 11-3 run that gave the Red Storm a 61-52 lead with 4:13 left.

Mitchell Beauford's jumper got Stony Brook within four at 63-59 with 2:30 left, but Ingram hit four free throws in a 7-0 surge that made it 70-59 with 1:01 to play.
