Patrick Powers and Jason Forte combined for 48 points to lead Brown to a 90-79 win over Stony Brook at the Indoor Sports Complex on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 3-6, while Brown improved to 3-7.
Stony Brook jumped out to an early 7-0 lead three minutes into the game on two baskets and a three pointer by Mike Konopka. Brown chipped at the lead, using an 8-2 run to cut it to one point at the 14:35 mark. After taking their first lead of the game at 15-13 halfway through the period, the visitors surged ahead by 11 with a 14-5 run over the next six minutes for the 29-18 advantage. A pair of free throws by Mitchell Beauford and a basket by Konopka cut the lead to seven with 1:55 to play, but a Patrick Powers dunk put the Bears back up by nine, 33-24, at the half.
Both teams traded baskets to open the second half before a basket by D.J. Munir made it 41-36 at 15:52. Brown bounced back with a 19-5 run over the next five minutes fueled by four three pointers by Powers to put the Bears up 60-41. After the Seawolves pulled within 13, the Bears stretched their lead to 23 as Forte converted on three consecutive three-point plays to make it 77-54 with 6:44 to go. Stony Brook scored 18 of the next 24 points on a three and a layup by Munir to cut it to 11 with 1:25 to play, but that was as close as the Seawolves would get as Brown held on for the win.
Beauford led four Stony Brook players in double-digits with 22 points. Popoko posted 17 points, while Munir collected 13 and Konopka chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.
Powers netted a game-high 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field, while Forte added 23.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, January 2 when they travel to Boston, Mass., to open up America East play at Northeastern. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
