Orono, Maine - Junior forward Heather Ernest logged her ninth double-double of the season with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Black Bears past Stony Brook University, 81-47, in America East women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
The win was Maine's 15th-straight victory, and improved the Black Bears' record to 19-4 overall and 12-0 in America East.
Ernest scored eight of Maine's first 10 points of the game, and scored 14 in the first half alone.
The Seawolves (7-16, 5-7 America East) played the Black Bears tough during the first 10 minutes of the opening half, and had the game knotted at 14-14 as late as the 10:45 mark of the first.
Ernest connected on a pair of foul shots to put Maine ahead, and in the process launched a 12-0 run over the next three minutes that left the Black Bears with a 26-14 lead with 7:28 to play in the half. The Black Bears widened their lead to 16
points, 41-25, by halftime.
The second half was all Maine, as the Black Bears opened with a 13-3 run, and held a 54-28 lead with 15:16 left in the game. The margin reached 38 points, 79-41, in UMaine's favor with 2:27 to play, before three late field goals trimmed the Black
Bears' final margin of victory to 34 points.
Junior forward Julie Veilleux tallied 13 points for the Black Bears, while sophomore forward Monica Peterson scored in double-figures for the second straight game with 13 points to go with seven boards. Veilleux and sophomore guard Kim Corbitt each dished out six assists.
Sophomore Danyelle Ingram led the Seawolves with 19 points, while Danielle DeGiorgio chipped in with 12 points. SBU's Bojana Bogetic pulled down 10 boards in the losing cause.
The Black Bears shot 53.6 percent from the field, and held the Seawolves to 35.7 percent shooting. Maine also posted a 42-26 edge on the boards.
Stony Brook returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when the Seawolves play host to Binghamton. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
