Men's Lacrosse Knocks Off Lafayette 8-6

Easton, Pa. - Freshman Jason Cappadoro recorded three goals and added two assists to lead Stony Brook to an 8-6 win in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon. It was Cappadoro's third three-goal game of the season and second in his last two games.

The Leopards jumped out to an early lead for the first time this season, as Matt Prevost found Pat Lennon for a man-up score with 2:50 remaining in the first period. The goal was Lennon's team-leading 13th, while the assist was Prevost's first point on the year.

Lafayette goalie Michael Koch, making his first start in goal this season, tallied nine saves in the opening 15 minutes.

Then in the second quarter, Prevost added his own unassisted tally and Drew Weisman took a feed from Tim Derosier to the net as the Leopards opened up a 3-0 lead at 9:03.

Stony Brook (2-3) answered back by crashing the crease and firing six straight goals, five in the second quarter, to establish a 6-3 lead at 4:54 of the third. Kevin Shea began the assault with back-to-back goals in the second quarter and Adam Marksberry knotted the game at three just minutes later. Cappadoro scored twice off feeds from Kyle Pearl to give SB a 5-3 halftime lead.

Jamey Lacey's first goal of the season extended SB's lead to 6-3, but Lafayette didn't quit, as Derosier found Weisman for the second time and Prevost notched his second of the game to trim the lead to 6-5 after three periods.

Adam Marksberry and Cappadoro added two insurance goals for the Seawolves at the start of the fourth period to rebuild an 8-5 lead.

Despite two Stony Brook penalties in the closing minutes, Lafayette was only able to capitalize once, with Lennon scoring an unassisted goal with 39 seconds left in the game.

Koch finished the game with 15 saves, while Stony Brook goalie Jeffrey Slater turned in a 12-save performance.
