Rachel Goldsmith registered a match-high 25 kills to lead the Stony Brook volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-24, 30-25, 25-30, 30-26) win over Manhattan Thursday night. The win was the fourth straight for Stony Brook and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Jaspers. The Seawolves improved to 5-8 while Manhattan slipped to 3-10.
With the first game of the match tied at 24, the Seawolves ripped off six straight points behind the left arm of Goldsmith to take game 1, 30-24. It was more of the same in game 2 as Goldsmith tallied eight kills in a 30-25 triumph for the home team.
The Jaspers bounced back to take game 3, 30-25, behind the play of Goedel Van Cauteren.
The final game saw SBU's Tesha Harry emerge as the deciding factor. The senior middle dominated the net and with the game tied at 22, she sparked the Seawolves to an 8-4 run to win the match. Harry racked up 15 kills on the night with an outstanding .591 hitting percentage. Maria Samilo chipped in with 13 kills while Melissa Votruba added 12. Setter Julie Zub totaled a match-high 54 assists.
Manhattan was paced by Van Cautern who notched a team-high 20 kills.
Stony Brook is back in action this weekend when it travels to Wagner College for a three-game tournament beginning with Yale at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
