BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont senior Aaron Yantzi posted her ninth double-double with a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead all five Catamount starters in double figures as UVM picked up its first America East victory with a 92-76 win over Stony Brook Tuesday evening at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont (7-4, 1-2) pulled out to a 24-9 lead to start the game. The Catamounts would extend the lead to 17 points, 34-17, with 7:55 left in the first half, but the Seawolves (2-10, 1-2) would storm back. A lay-up by Bojana Bogetic ignited a 23-8 run to cut the margin to two, 42-40 with 1:12 left. Vermont's Jamilah Corbitt converted a lay-up in the final 30 seconds to give UVM a slim 44-40 lead at the half. Stony Brook freshman Mykeema Ford netted 10 of her 16 points in the rally and the Seawolves made 5-of-11 three-pointers to shoot 45 percent from long range in the stanza.
The Catamounts opened the second half with three three-pointers and a pair of lay-ups by Yantzi to push the lead back to 10, 57-47, at the 16:28 mark. Ashleigh Cuncic drilled a three-pointer at 11:28 to put the Catamounts up 70-53. Lani Boardman added another three with nine minutes left to give Vermont its biggest lead of the night, 77-55. However, Stony Brook mounted another rally. A three-pointer by Akia Booker sparked a 17-4 run that brought the Seawolves to within nine, 81-72, with 2:56 left in the game. Yantzi responded for Vermont, scoring six straight points to push the lead back to 13, 87-74. UVM closed the game making 7-of-10 foul shots for the final margin.
Jessica Smith paced the Seawolves with a team-high 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sherry Jordan added 15 points, nine boards and handed out five assists, while Ford finished with 16 points on the night.
The Seawolves are back in action when they host Hartford on Saturday at 2 p.m.
