Hana Peljto posted game-highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead Harvard over Stony Brook 72-64 at the Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 1-8 on the year, while the Crimson improved to 6-5.
Harvard came out on fire in the first half, connecting on eight of its first 10 shots, including five three pointers, to take a 21-7 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Crimson cooled off, but still stretched their lead to 16 with 5:59 to go before the Seawolves used a 12-5 run fueled by two baskets and a pair of free throws by Mykeema Ford to close the half down by nine, 42-33.
A Sherry Jordan layup at 17:10 in the second cut the visitor's lead to seven, but Reka Cserny drained a three and a layup to push the advantage back to 14 at 55-41 with 12 minutes to play. A three-point play by Jordan sparked a 7-0 run for the Seawolves to close the gap back to seven with 9:41 to go, but that was as close as they would get as the Crimson stretched their lead back to as many as 15 with six minutes left.
Ford led Stony Brook with 18 points, while Jessica Smith added 12 points and six rebounds. Jordan finished with 10 rebounds and seven steals.
Peljto and Cserny each collected 21 points for Harvard. Tricia Tubridy added 14 points and 13 boards while Katie Murphy chipped in 12 points.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to open up their America East Conference schedule vs. UMBC. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
