Eric Dobson scored 22 points and Kevin Reed added 18 as Maine handed Stony Brook a 71-63 defeat in America East men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears used a 14-7 run to start the second half to extend a 26-24 halftime lead and never looked back in improving to 12-7 overall, 6-4 in America East play. Stony Brook has now lost five of its last six outings to slip to 6-13, 3-7.
Stony Brook jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead over the first 6:30 behind five points from freshman Mike Popoko. Maine chipped away and Reed's trey with 6:13 to go in the half deadlocked the game at 19. After a basket by D.J. Munir gave SB a 21-19 lead, Ludmil Hadjisotirov banked in a 3-pointer to give the vistors a 22-21 advantage, a lead they built to 26-24 at the break.
Eric Dobson scored three straight layups during the 14-7 run to open the second half as Maine went ahead 40-31. Another 3-pointer by Reed at the 7:19 mark gave the Black Bears a 56-45 lead, its biggest of the game. Stony Brook got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Munir lead three Seawolves in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds. Popoko chipped in with 15 points while Cori Spencer netted 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Stony Brook is back in action next Thursday when it hosts Northeastern. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
