Vestal, N.Y. -
Jessica Smith scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds but it was not enough as Binghamton outlasted Stony Brook 71-64 in America East women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats used a strong inside game and senior point guard Kate Townley tied a career-high with 20 points to lead Binghamton (14-8, 9-5 AE) past the Seawolves(6-17, 5-9 AE).
Binghamton led 32-25 lead at the break but the visiting Seawolves fought back to tie the game at 35-35 on a jumper by Smith with 13:42 left in the second half. From there, the Bearcats went on an 8-2 run in the ensuing 2:50 to take a 43-37 advantage.
The Seawolves got to within 60-58 with 4:09 remaining on a pair of free throws by Mykeema Ford, but a jumper by Townley followed by a steal and a layup by sophomore guard Jen Blues stretched the lead back to 64-58 and prompted Stony Brook to call a timeout with 3:20 to go.
Townley and Laws hit a combined 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
For Smith, who has won back-to-back America East Rookie of the Week honors, it was her third double-double in her last six outings. Ford added 13 points while Sherry Jordan finished with 11.
The Seawolves are back in action on Wednesday night when they host BU. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
