Mykeema Ford's 27 points were not enough as senior center Maren Matthias scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 73-66 victory over Stony Brook at Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Stony Brook to 7-18 overall, 6-10 in conference play.
UNH (10-15 overall, 6-10 America East) was down 6-0 to start the game following a pair of quick three-pointers by the Seawolves, but quickly recovered with a 22-3 run of their own to take a 22-9 lead with 9:49 remaining in the opening stanza. The Wildcats never trailed again after that point but the Seawolves fought back several times, including a 24-14 run to close out the first half and cut the difference to just three points at the intermission, 36-33.
The second half was similar as UNH opened up an impressive 18-point lead (58-40) with 13:06 to play in the contest on the heels of a 22-6 run. However, Stony Brook once again fought its way back into the game and closed the gap to just three points (62-59) with 4:55 to go, utilizing a furious 19-4 run of their own.
However, UNH held on down the stretch with three free throws by sophomore guard Emily Hardy and two more by freshman forward Ray Williams to ice the win for UNH.
Ford led all scorers with a game-high 27 points while Kelly Watson added 16 points for the visitors.
Stony Brook is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Maine. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
