About The Catamounts: Vermont sports a 3-4 overall record as it begins conference play on Saturday against Stony Brook. Sean Layton leads UVM in scoring with 18 points and has a team-best 14 goals to his credit this season. Goalie Mike Gabel has a 8.24 goals against average.
Versus Vermont: Stony Brook holds a 2-0 series edge after a 6-4 win at Vermont last year. Jason Cappadoro led the way for SB with a goal and three assists.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook overwhelmed Air Force with a dominating defensive performance on Wednesday night in a 7-3 win. The Seawolves were led in goal by Brendan Callahan who made 18 saves, and George LaFlare, who keyed an opportunistic offense with two goals and two assists. It was the second straight year that SB shut down Air Force. SB bested the Falcons 5-2 at LaValle Stadium in 2003.
The Wall Of Callahan: Freshman goalie Brendan Callahan has been simply outstanding since earning the starting nod in goal four games ago. During that stretch, he has posted a 3-1 record and lowered his goals against average to a Division I best 5.37. He made a career-high 18 saves in Wednesday night's win and has allowed only 20 goals in his last four games. His .727 save percentage ranks first among all goalies at the Division I level.
The last time a SB goalie led the nation in save percentage was in 1998 when Greg Taylor was crowned the NCAA Division I save percentage champ with a .671 save percentage.
Conference Openers: Saturday opens up conference play for both Stony Brook and Vermont. The Seawolves have gone 1-1 in conference openers since joining the America East. SB was picked to finish fourth in the 2004 America East preseason poll after finishing third the last two seasons.
Hit The Ground Running: Kyle Pearl has once again been a ground ball machine for SB. He has scooped up 19 ground balls in his last three games, seven in each of his last two outings. On Wednesday he notched his first point of the season on the game-winning goal by Jason Cappadoro.
The Brothers Weiss: Stony Brook's homeland security couldn't be any safer with the brother duo of Aaron and David Weiss around. Senior
Aaron, a shortstick defenseman, and David, a starting close defenseman have been a big part of why Stony Brook is yielding only 6.83 goals per game.
News and Notes: George LaFlare had a season-high four points against Air Force. He ranks second on the team in scoring with 12 points . . . Cappadoro's game-winning goal against Air Force gave him a team-leading 13 points, an average of 2.6 points per game.
