Men's Lacrosse Surges Past Vermont 6-5

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team used a four-goal third quarter to rally from a 4-2 halftime deficit and defeat Vermont 6-5 in the America East conference opener on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook has won four consecutive games to improve to 4-3, 1-0 in the America East, while Vermont falls to 3-5, 0-1 with the loss.

Vermont pounced on the Seawolves to begin the game, scoring three goals in the first five minutes to take a 3-0 advantage. SB battled back to cut the deficit to 3-2 after one period of play, as Jason Cappadoro scored on a feed from Ryan Maehr with 4:57 left in the period and then assisted on Adam Zetzer's goal less than a minute and a half later.

The Catamounts scored the only goal of the second quarter on a man-up tally by Sean Layton with 10:20 left in the half and went into the locker room with a 4-2 lead.

Stony Brook stormed out of the gate in the third period, scoring four consecutive goals to take a 6-4 advantage. Adam Marksberry sparked the outburst, tallying an unassisted man-up goal at the 7:56 mark of the period. Less than a minute later, UVM goalie Mike Gabel stopped a shot by Ryan Maehr, but the rebound was kicked into the goal by a Vermont defenseman to even the game at 4-4. The Seawolves took the lead on a man-up goal by Larry Cerasi with 4:37 left in the third and Sean Chamberlain capped the run to give SB a 6-4 advantage at the end of three quarters.

Vermont cut the lead to one on a goal by Dan Zwirko with 8:24 to play, but Brendan Callahan made five of his seven saves in the fourth quarter and the Seawolves held on for the 6-5 win.

Cappadoro and Maehr each had a goal and an assist to lead the Seawolves. Layton scored two goals and Austin Humphries tallied three assists to lead the Catamounts offensively. Gabel made a game-high 13 saves in the loss.

The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday, April 3, when they travel to Binghamton. Face-off is 1 p.m.
