BC Tops Women's Lacrosse 18-8 in Season Opener

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Boston College scored five consecutive goals to pull away in the second half on its way to an 18-8 win over Stony Brook in women's lacrosse action at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-0.

Leading 6-5 at the break, Carley St. Lucia opened second half scoring with an unassisted tally at the 32:07 mark. Justine Burr converted on a feed from Courtney Legath 28 seconds later before Suzie Breaznell netted back-to-back goals to put the Eagles up 10-5. Legath added her second goal of the game off an assist from Breaznell at 39:06 to end the 5-0 run.

Danielle Werner followed with a goal 11 seconds later to make it 11-6 in favor of the visitors, who then tacked on three more goals before Werner struck again on a free position at the 50:20 mark to make it 15-7. After Legath netted her third goal of the afternoon, Amy Taylor rounded out SB's scoring with her second tally of the game at 54:21.

BC added three more goals, including two from Meggie O'Neill, in the closing 5:25 to make it 18-8.

BC took an early 3-0 lead just 12:20 into the contest, but Stony Brook answered with three straight goals of its own, two from Werner and one from freshman Carlee Buck, to tie the game at three just under three minutes later.

Jackie Yovankin scored consecutive goals to put the Eagles back up 5-3 and Legath added another off a free position to make it 6-3 at 19:35. The Seawolves battled back, as Taylor and Werner closed out the scoring in the half to pull SB within one at 6-5.

Werner led SB with five goals, while Taylor added two goals and one assist. Jen Sandtorv (0-1)took the loss in net, allowing 17 goals.

Breaznell registered five goals and an assist and Legath posted three goals and six helpers for the Eagles. Tara McKennett (1-0) picked up the win for BC, turing away 11 shots on the afternoon.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on LIU at 1:00 p.m.
