Stony Brook senior guard D.J. Munir (Providence, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) was named to the All-Met Third Team at the 71st annual Collegiate Awards Presentations Wednesday night which honors the top basketball players in the metropolitan area. The event was held at the Pegasus West Restaurant at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.
It was the second time that Munir was honored by the NIT/MBWA. Munir was also a third-team selection following the 2001-02 season when he became the second player in school history to be recognized by the NIT and the Met Basketball Writers. Leon Brisport earned second-team honors following the 2001-02 season. Joining Munir on the third team were Rob Thomson (Fairfield), Nigel Wyatte (Wagner), Daryll Hill (St. John's), Greg Jenkins (Iona) and Peter Mulligan (Manhattan).
Munir finished the regular season ranked fourth in the America East in scoring with 15.7 points per game and scored 1,590 points in his career, placing him fourth on the school's all-time scoring list. He was also a three-time all-conference selection.
Munir was outstanding at the 2004 America East tournament and was the first player in school history to be named the America East All-Tournament team after leading SB to the semfinals. He hit the game-winning shot with 30 seconds remaining to help SB defeat No. 1 seed BU, 62-58, in the quarterfinals, finishing with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists while not committing a single turnover in the upset win. Munir had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists in SB's 65-59 win against UMBC in the first round.
Munir was one of two Seawolves honored Wednesday night. Sherry Jordan also was recognized for the second time, being named to the All-Met Division I Women's Second Team.
