Stony Brook, N.Y. - UMBC opened the game on a 6-1 run and never looked back as the Retrievers topped the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team 24-10 in the America East opener for both teams on Saturday evening at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With the loss, the Seawolves dropped to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in America East play, while UMBC improved to 2-7, 1-0 in league play.

UMBC's Kelly Fiorani opened the scoring with an unassisted tally 42 seconds into the game, but less than a minute later Danielle Werner evened the score off an assist by Katie Savino. The Retrievers then went on a 5-0 run over the next eight minutes as Kelly Fahey and Lauren Hess each scored twice and Fioriani capped the run with her second goal of the game to give the visitors a 6-1 lead.

Amy Taylor and Andrea Venditti scored around a UMBC tally to make it 7-3 before the Retrievers scored three straight goals to go back up by seven. Danielle Werner and Taylor scored back-to-back goals before UMBC's Jenny Kasper scored the next two to make the score 12-5. Venditti's second goal of the game closed out the scoring in the first half.

After a free position marker by Fiorani, Werner and Katie Pullen scored consecutive goals to pull SB within five at 13-8, but UMBC scored 11 of the last 13 goals of the contest to put the game away.

Werner led the Seawolves with three goals and an assist, while Carlee Buck added four assists. Amy Taylor posted two goals and an assist and Venditti scored twice. Jen Sandtorv (2-3) made five saves in the loss.

Fiorani led the Retrievers with five goals and two assists and Hess added five goals and an assist. Kristina Raab (2-0) turned away 12 shots in the victory.

The Seawolves return to action when they travel to take on St. Francis (Pa.) on April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
