VESTAL, N.Y. - Stony Brook (6-8, 2-3 America East) scored back-to-back goals in a span of 37 seconds midway through the second half to take the lead for good, and held off Binghamton (4-10, 1-4 AE) 12-10 in an America East women's lacrosse matchup on Friday afternoon at the East Gym Complex. The Bearcats led 6-2 midway through the opening frame before the Seawolves rallied for the win to remain alive in their quest to return to the America East Tournament, while knocking Binghamton out of contention.
Stony Brook led 2-1 early on behind markers from Andrea Venditti and Carlee Buck before Binghamton scored five unanswered goals in just over six minutes to build a 6-2 lead. Becky Green capped the run with the first of her two goals in the game at the 17:15 mark.
The Seawolves closed the half with three straight goals from Venditti, Beth Arikian and Buck to pull within 6-5 at the break, and added two more to start the second stanza and take a 7-6 lead. Gabbamonte's third goal of the game at the 10:28 mark knotted the score at 7-7, but Stony Brook's Amy Taylor and Danielle Werner scored back-to-back goals to push the Seawolves in front for good. The Bearcats closed the gap to 9-8 on a score by Anna Riordan, but Werner and Buck added a pair of goals to extend the lead to 11-8, and Taylor added her second of the afternoon at the 26:19 mark to put the game away.
Buck had three goals and three assists for Stony Brook, which also got three goals and an assist from Werner. Taylor and Venditti each scored twice for the Seawolves. Jen Sandtorv turned away 12 shots in net to earn the victory.
Gabbamonte had a career-high four goals to lead Binghamton, while Green and Lauren Wetherell each collected two goals and two assists. Christa Quon had 15 saves in goal, with nine of those coming in the second half.
The Seawolves close out their regular season at Albany on Sunday at noon.
