Leonora Joy and Dale Summerville captured first place in their respective races to lead Stony Brook cross country in their season opener at the Stony Brook Invitational on Friday afternoon at Sunken Meadow State Park. The women's team captured the team title for the third straight year, while the men's team took second place.
Joy, who led a sweep of the top three spots for the women's team, covered the 5K distance in 19:14.2. Newcomer Sarah Beresford finished second, while Dana Hastie took third. Other scorers for SB were Sarah Herbert (ninth) and Tiffany Coon (25th).
On the men's side, Summerville opened up his senior campaign with a win, covering the 5K course in 16:01.6 to lead the men's team to their highest season opening finish in five years. Brian Farrell was seventh followed by Mathew Almond in eighth and Shaun Krawitz in 11th.
