Alexis Castro netted a game-high 22 points off the bench as Vermont topped Stony Brook 85-75 on Wednesday night at Patrick Gymnasium. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 3-9 and 1-2 in America East play, while the Catamounts improved to 6-6 and 2-1.
UVM led 39-33 at the break before opening the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 15 point lead. SB answered with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 48-41 on a three-point play by Jessica Smith and a three by Stephanie Barlett.
The Catamounts stretched their advantage back to 13 before a 10-2 spurt brought the Seawolves back within five points at 61-56 with 8:03 to play.
Jessie Boylan drilled a three-pointer with three minutes to play to make it 72-67, but the Seawolves didn't hit a field goal until Inbar Orion's layup made it 77-69 with 51 seconds on the clock.
UVM would go on to make 8-of-8 free throws in the closing minute to seal the victory.
Dana Ferraro picked up her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Smith led SB with 14 points. Mykeema Ford netted 12 points and dished out seven assists, while Boylan finished with 12 points and Orion chipped in with 10.
Alexis Castro led the Catamounts with a game-high 22 points.
The Seawolves are back in action on Satuday at Hartford at 2 p.m.
