Monmouth jumped out to a 21-0 first half lead and never looked back as the Hawks cruised to a 36-7 victory over Stony Brook in the two teams' Northeast Conference opener on Saturday afteroon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves have now lost three straight to fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in NEC play, while the Hawks improved to 3-1 and 1-0.
Monmouth jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on its first posession of the game 4:26 into the contest as Leonard Brice dashed in from six yards out and Fred Weingart converted the extra point.
After forcing a Stony Brook punt, the Hawks doubled their lead on Walter Carter's two-yard scamper and Weingart's extra point with 5:06 left in the quarter.
The visitors extended their lead early in the second quarter when Brian Boland connected with Miles Austin for a 15-yard score. Weingart's kick was good and Monmouth led 21-0 at the break.
The Seawolves lone score came on a 59-yard pass from Josh Dudash to Josh Anderson. Matt Weeks' extra point made it 21-7 at the 9:08 mark of the third quarter.
The Hawks would add two more touchdowns as Boland hooked up with Brendan Kennedy for a 21-yard score and Austin blocked a punt and returned it for a TD to put the game well out of reach.
Dudash finished 17-for-42 for 200 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Anderson caught seven passes for 99 yards, while Richie Richards tallied a game-high 15 tackles and Daniel Michitsch added 12 tackles and a pick.
Boland went 28-for-41 for 296 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. Miles caught eight passes for 107 yards and totalled a pair of touchdowns. Nick Castellano added a team-best eight tackles in the win.
The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on Albany at 4:00 p.m.
