Oct. 22, 2005

Final Stats

Fairfield, Conn. - Ed Pricolo's two-yard touchdown run with 8:20 to play propelled Sacred Heart to a 21-14 win over Stony Brook in Northeast Conference football action on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Seawolves as they fall to 3-4 overall, 2-2 in conference play while the Pioneers improved to 2-5, 1-3.

After a first half that saw them muster only 61 yards of total offense and trail 7-0, Stony Brook roared out of the locker room to even the score at 7 on the first drive of the second half. The Seawolves marched 80 yards on nine plays and knotted the game when Josh Dudash hit Josh Anderson in stride on a post pattern for a 51-yard touchdown with 11:55 to play in the third quarter.

Midway through the third quarter, SHU's defense set up the go-ahead score. Andrew Grant interecepted a Dudash pass at the Stony Brook 36 and six plays later, the Pioneers converted the turnover into points. Evin Jones took a swing pass out of the backfield, made a tackler miss and ran nine yards to the end zone to give SHU a 14-7 lead.

Once again, it was the duo of Dudash and Anderson that brought the Seawolves back. Trapped inside their own 1-yard line at the beginning of the fourth quarter, SB answered with a 99-yard scoring drive. After a short run, Dudash hit Anderson on a slant that the junior wideout cut up the sideline to the 39 to get the Seawolves out of danger. Three plays later, Dudash looked deep to Anderson again, lofting a ball deep downfield where Anderson ran under it for a 46-yard touchdown to again get the Seawolves even.

The Pioneers responded on the next drive by going 81 yards on seven plays to set up Pricolo's game-winning touchdown run.

Stony Brook had one last chance late in the fourth quarter, taking over at their own 20-yard line with just over a minute to go. Two plays later, Dudash lofted a pass towards Anderson near midfield that he reached up to grab but he was met by Jon Wilson, who ripped the ball away from Anderson for an interception to seal the win.

After a scoreless first quarter that saw the Pioneers outgain Stony Brook 97-19, Sacred Heart finally cashed in early in the second quarter. Tyler Arciaga capped a seven-play, 63-yard drive when he connected with Corey Bundy along the near sideline. Bundy broke a tackle and dashed 29 yards down the sideline for the first score of the game.

Later in the quarter, the Seawolves were fortunate not to fall behind further when Bundy and Arciaga connected again on a wild play. Arciaga hit Bundy deep down the middle of the field over Adam Barzar and as Bundy raced for an apparent touchdown, Barzar recovered to knock the ball from Bundy's hands at the Stony Brook 5-yard line. Chris Alceus recovered the loose ball to thwart the Pioneers drive.

Stony Brook's best chance to score in the first half came with under a minute to play. The Seawolves drove to the SHU 4-yard line and on 3rd-and-1, Rod Williams was dropped for a six-yard loss with 17 seconds on the clock. The Seawolves rushed their field goal unit on the field, but Luke Gaddis' 27-yard attempt was blocked by Jeff Hodges as time ran out.

The Seawolves defense struggled all afternoon, yielding 461 yards of offense, 331 through the air. Pricolo finished with 147 yards on 31 carries.

Dudash was 19 of 33 for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Anderson had nine catches for a career-high 185 yards, the third-best single-game effort in school history. Stony Brook was undone by mistakes all afternoon as it committed two turnovers and flagged nine times.

Stony Brook is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Robert Morris. Kick-off is 1 pm.
