Maine Blanks Women's Soccer, 6-0

The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated Stony Brook 6-0 on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. The Seawolves fall to 3-10-1, 0-4-0 in conference play while the Black Bears improve to 7-4-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in America East play.

Marie-Andree Canuel had a hat trick for Maine, while Erin Corey had two goals and an assist for the Black Bears.

Maine, which dominated play throughout the game, outshooting Stony Brook 31-8 in the match, opened the scoring at 12:24. Erin Corey fired a shot on goal that Stony Brook keeper Cindy Bennett was able to save. The rebound came right to Marie-Andree Canuel who beat Bennett to her left.

Maine gained a 2-0 advantage when Laura Harper beat a defender and found a wide-open Corey in front of the net. Corey was able to slip the ball past Bennett at the 27:04 mark.

The Black Bears found the back of the net again when Brittany Saisselin had a shot hit off the post and the rebound came directly to Canuel, who was alone in the middle of the penalty area, who then found the back of the net just over three minutes later.

Maine closed out the scoring in the first half with less than four minutes to play. Natalie Berry found Harper whose quick shot deflected off a Stony Brook defender and into the net.

Canuel got the hat trick just over a minute into the second half. Heather Hathorn had a long cross from the corner that found Canuel inside the penalty area. She recorded her third tally at 46:07.

Corey finished off the scoring at the 53:34 mark of the second half.

Cindy Bennett stopped six shots in goal for the Seawolves while her counterpart Jasmine Phillips made two saves in goal.

Stony Brook returns to action when they host New Hampshire next Thursday, Oct. 13. Kick-off is slated for 12:00 p.m.
