Jamaica, N.Y. -
St. John's took advantage of Stony Brook's poor second half en route to a 79-60 victory over the Seawolves on Saturday afternoon at Carnasecca Arena. With the loss, SB falls to 5-4 on the year while the Red Storm moves to 9-1.
The first half was a hard-fought battle, with SJU holding just a two point lead with 1:29 to play after a Cheri Davis basket. The Red Storm would stretch that advantage to eight points at the break, using an 8-2 run to close the half.
The Seawolves chipped away at the lead early in the second half, pulling back within two points at the 14:18 mark after a pair of Mykeema Ford three point baskets made it 47-45.
That would spark an 11-0 SJU run, however, as Stony Brook missed seven shots and turned the ball over four times over the course of the 5:17 spurt. That run put the Red Storm up 61-41 with just over eight minutes to play, and put the game away as SB could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Jessica Smith led all scorers with 21 points to go with nine rebounds, while Ford finished with 19 points, 15 coming in the second half.
Kia Wright led four St. John's players in double figures with 15 points. Danielle Chambers netted 14, while Andrea Peterson added 12 and Tiina Sten chipped in with 10 off the bench.
The Seawolves return to action after the holidays when they host Delaware State on December 28 at 7:00 p.m.
