Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Farah Vasquez Jacobo provided a huge spark off the bench, posting career-highs of 12 points and seven rebounds to help lift Stony Brook to a 70-59 victory over Delaware State at the Indoor Sports Complex on Wednesday night. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 6-4 on the season, including 4-1 at home for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign.
After sitting out the first half, Vasquez Jacobo was the story in the second, nailing 6-of-6 shots from the field for 12 points and pulling down seven boards in her best performance as a Seawolf.
Stony Brook stretched a 10-point halftime lead to as many as 17 after a 6-0 run made it 52-35 with 9:25 to play in the second half. DSU (5-3) rallied back with a 17-8 run of its own behind six points by Ashlee Burbage to pull within eight points with 3:27 on the clock.
Just under a minute later, Vasquez Jacobo answered with back-to-back baskets to push the Stony Brook lead back to 12. The Hornets would not go away, however, as Najmah Fauntleroy sank a jumper and Jameka Smith netted 3-of-4 free throws, including a pair at the 1:11 mark, to pull within seven at 66-59 with just over a minute to play.
That was as close as the visitors would get though, as Mykeema Ford and Kelly Watson both sank 2-of-2 free throws in the final 36 seconds of the contest to put the game out of reach.
Jessica Smith netted a team-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, making seven of her final eight shots after starting the game 0-for-4. Ford finished with 13 points and tied her career-high with nine assists and eight rebounds. The nine assists also tied her for the fourth-best single-game effort in program history. Watson chipped in with 12 points and four assists off the bench, while Dana Ferraro pulled down 14 rebounds to go with nine points.
Jameka Smith led all scorers with 17 points to go with 11 rebounds and three steals, while Fauntleroy added 13 points and 14 boards for the Hornets.
