Final Stats
Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC women's basketball team (7-12, 2-8 AE)
fell to Stony Brook (5-14, 3-7 AE) in America East women's basketball
action on Saturday night by a final of 71-62 at UMBC RAC Arena. With the
win Stony Brook sweeps both regular season contests with the Retrievers.
In the first half Stony Brook's trio of Jessica Smith (13), Mykeema Ford
(12) and Jessie Boylan (11) went into double-figures leading the
Seawolves out to a seven point lead, 39-32 at the break.
Stony Brook continued to add to their lead with a 7-0 run to start the
second stanza as Boylan dropped a three-point basket and Dana Ferraro
converted two jumpers, giving Stony Brook a 46-32 advantage.
UMBC came storming back with a 13-2 run capped off by a Heather Luttrell
jumper off an assist from Sharri Rohde. UMBC closed the gap to one on
two occasions, 52-51 with a Brittnie Hughes lay-up and 54-53 with Matea
Pender laying one in off the glass, but it was the Seawolves' trio that
answered with big buckets scoring 15 of SBU's final 17 points.
Boylan finished with a career-high 22 points, Ford with 19 points and
Smith with 17 as the three went 22-of-37 from the floor for 59.4
percent. Boylan was 6-of-8 from three-point range, including hitting her
final one with 50 seconds remaining to send the score back to
seven-point game.
UMBC and the Seawolves both got off to strong starts in the game with
UMBC holding a 19-18 lead with 9:18 in the first half with six lead
changes taking place in the first 11 minutes. Stony Brook, with 8:32
left in the first half, converted a lay-up by Jessica Smith and hit an
ensuing free throw, giving the Seawolves the lead at 21-19, a lead they
would not relinquish the rest of the game.
The Retrievers placed three players in double figures as well with
Pender finishing with 19 points going 7-of-20 from the field and 4-of-6
outside the arc. Rohde tallied 16 points and five rebounds while
Luttrell finished with 12 points. UMBC is 3-2 this year with players in
double-figures, both losses to Stony Brook.
The Seawolves shot 50.0 percent in the game, 26-of-52, while UMBC went
25-of-60 for 41.7 percent.
