Women's Lacrosse Falls to Hofstra 16-6

Hempstead, N.Y. - Amy Taylor netted two goals as Stony Brook fell to Hofstra 16-6 Tuesday evening at Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University in the first meeting of Long Island's only two NCAA Division I women's lacrosse teams. With the loss, Stony Brook falls to 4-3 while the Pride improves to 8-1.

Katie Savino snuck a low shot past Hofstra goalkeeper Maisie Osteen to earn the first tally of the game on a pass from Kristen Dupuis in the opening minutes of the first half. Catherine Guerriere found the back of the net, sneaking a shot past Stony Brook netminder Jen Sandtorv, to answer for the Pride. Amy Taylor responded a minute later on a free position awarded from a Hofstra foul to take the 2-1 lead. The Pride's Becky Thorn tied the game at two at 18:28. Kim Hillier scored back-to-back goals three minutes apart put the Pride ahead 4-2. Thorn earned the final tally of the half, putting a quick shot past Sandtorv with 5:43 to go making it 5-2 heading into halftime.

Hofstra scored four straight to open the second half before Danielle Werner scored on a free position shot at 22:30 to make it 9-3. Thorn netted back-to-back goals to put the Pride ahead 11-3 with 16:21 to play. Another goal at 12:39 extended the Pride lead to nine prompting a Stony Brook timeout. Taylor netted her second of the game just seconds later, but Hofstra answered with three straight goals to take a 15-4 lead. Marrisa Trachtenberg fired a shot into the back of the net for Stony Brook to earn the Seawolves' fifth of the game. Hofstra responded making it 16-5 with under six minutes to play until Carlee Buck scored her first of the day on a pass from Trachtenberg with 3:21 to play to make the final tally of the game.

Taylor and Trachtenberg led the Seawolves with two points a piece. Jen Sandtorv finished with eight saves in the loss.

Hofstra was led by Thorn's five points on four goals and an assist. Kim Hillier chipped in with four goals. Osteen earned the win in the net stopping four Stony Brook shots.

The Seawolves return home on Friday to kick off America East play with a 7:00 p.m. game against Binghamton.
