Box Score
Charleston, S.C. -
The Stony Brook softball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses on Friday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Villanova in extra innings and 2-1 to UNC-Wilmington on a pinch-hit walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the losses, the Seawolves fall to 1-6 this year.
Stony Brook was unable to put together anything offensively versus Villanova, only tallying one hit as they fell to the Wildcats in eight innings. Playing an international tiebreak (runner on second base to start the inning) Villanova was able to plate a pair of runs, scoring the first on a sacrifice fly and putting up an insurance run on a double by Sarah Wall.
Despite throwing well, Angela Andrews (0-4) suffered the loss as she held Villanova to six hits while striking out six without allowing a walk.
The Seawolves looked like they would come away from the afternoon with a victory as they held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning versus UNCW. Whitney Knudsen dashed Stony Brook's hopes, however, belting a walkoff two-run pinch-hit home run to lift the Seahawks to a dramatic victory.
Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Suzanne Turek that scored Kristen Brust with the Seawolves only run of the day.
Sarah Hoffman tossed a complete game in the loss, allowing eights while striking out two batters. Jane Stein, Turek and Hoffman each went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Stony Brook offense.
The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow when they face East Tennessee State and Georgia State at the third and final day of the Charleston Southern Tournament.
