Carlee Buck racked up seven points on a goal and six assists to lead the Seawolves in their 14-13 victory over Binghamton in the teams' America East opener on Friday night at LaValle Stadium. With the win, Stony Brook improves to 5-3, 1-0 while the Bearcats fall to 1-5, 0-1.
Buck broke her own single game assist school record with six assists and her seven points rank her third in single game points for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook came out scoring four goals straight in the first ten minutes, including a pair by Amy Taylor. Binghamton responded five of their own with with two from Danielle Edwards to take a 5-4 lead with 13:12 to go in the first half. The Seawolves scored five of the final eight goals of the half, fueled by a pair of tallies from Diana Caroleo, to send SB into the break ahead 9-8.
Edwards opened up second half scoring with a free position goal at 20:37 to tie the game at nine. Caroleo put SB back up, but Edwards tied it again at 15:12. Buck fed Jill Gridley and Jennifer Joyce for back-to-back Stony Brook goals to make it 12-10, but Binghamton responded with two more to knot the game at 10 with just over three minutes to play.
Buck answered with an unassisted goal at 2:07 and Werner converted on a free position 20 seconds later and the Seawolves led 14-12. Binghamton mustered one last goal from Leanne Musso with 54 seconds left but Marrisa Trachtenberg won the final draw control and the Seawolves ran down the clock to hold on for the win.
Caroleo and Taylor each netted three goals. Werner chipped in with two goals and an assist and Gridley scored twice for the Seawolves. Jen Sandtorv made six saves in the win.
Edwards finished with four goals and Bearcat goalie Christa Quon turned away 13 shots in the loss.
The Seawolves are back in action Tuesday evening at Wagner for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with the Seahawks.
