Women's Lacrosse Falls to UMBC 18-14

Baltimore, Md. - Stony Brook fell to UMBC 18-14 on Friday evening in Baltimore, finishing the season with an overall record of 8-7, 2-4 in America East conference play, for the most wins in program history.

The Retrievers kicked off first half scoring with a goal six minutes in but Stony Brook responded with a Katie Savino tally a minute later to tie the game at one. UMBC snuck two more by goalkeeper Gina DeNezzo before the Seawolves rattled off five straight goals to pull ahead 6-3. The Retrievers went on the offensive, answering with three tallies of their own before Amy Taylor netted her second of the day to make it 7-6 in favor of SB. UMBC scored three straight to end the half, leading Stony Brook 9-7.

UMBC started the second stanza with a goal from Kelly Fahey to go up 10-7 before Danielle Werner and Jill Gridley pulled the Seawolves within two with back-to-back goals. The Retrievers came back with a goal of their own and Taylor responded for SB on a free position. After three straight UMBC tallies, Werner netted back-to-back goals to make it 14-12 in UMBC's favor.

The Retrievers went on a 4-2 run to end the game and put it out of reach for the Seawolves.

Werner finished with five points on four goals and an assist. Carlee Buck chipped in four points on a goal and three assists. Jen Sandtorv finished with five saves after replacing DeNezzo at the half.

Kelly Fiorani led UMBC with six points on five goals and an assist and Fahey finished with five points on three goals and two assists.
