Women's Lacrosse Holds Out to Defeat Wagner 15-14

Staten Island, N.Y. - Jill Gridley and Amy Taylor racked up six points each as Stony Brook held on to defeat Wagner 15-14 on Tuesday afternoon in Staten Island. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 6-3, while the Seahawks fall to 4-7.

The Seawolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead on goals from Taylor, Kristen Dupuis, Diana Caroleo and two from Gridley. Wagner fired back with five of their own to knot the game until Carlee Buck assisted Katelin Billups on two SB tallies to put Stony Brook ahead 7-5. Wagner pulled ahead 8-7 with less than a minute to play in the half before Gridley and Dupuis struck again twenty seconds apart to give the Seawolves the 9-8 halftime advantage.

Wagner's Anne Thomas led off second half scoring with a goal at 25:27. Gridley and Taylor scored on back-to-back free positions to put SB ahead 11-9. Buck assisted Gridley on a tally and Dupuis and Taylor scored two more for the Seawolves to take the 14-9 lead heading into the last 11 minutes of play.

Wagner scored four goals in two minutes for a late comeback effort with less than seven minutes to go, cutting Stony Brook's lead to 14-12. Dupuis netted the final SB tally with 4:57 to play, Wagner answered quickly 27 seconds later on a goal from Heather George, but would not score another for the rest of the way as Stony Brook held on for the 15-14 win.

Buck finished with five points on five assists and Dupuis chipped in five points on four goals and an assist. SB goalkeeper Jen Sandtorv made five saves in the win.

The Seahawks were led by Leann Matta's six points on four goals and two assists. Wagner netminder Erica Brown stopped 10 SB shots in the loss.

Stony Brook is back in action at home on Saturday to play the Albany Great Danes at 7:00 p.m.
