BALTIMORE, Md. — No. 5-seeded Stony Brook women's lacrosse fell to the No. 4 seed Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, 13-12, on Thursday afternoon in Baltimore.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After having a goal wiped off the board in the opening minutes, the Seawolves were tested early but responded with a big defensive stop, killing off a Blue Jays player-up opportunity. Stony Brook capitalized on the ensuing possession, as
Julia Fusco found the back of the net to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. Building off the opening goal, Stony Brook added two more scores to take a 3-0 advantage with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter. Johns Hopkins answered quickly, erasing the early deficit with three goals in less than four minutes to even the score at 3-3. The tie lasted less than a minute, as
Haydin Eisfeld buried a goal with 40 seconds left in the quarter to give the Seawolves a 4-3 lead heading into the second.
Stony Brook's defense came out strong to begin the second quarter, applying pressure and making things difficult for the Blue Jays' offense, helping maintain the one-goal lead. The Seawolves then used their speed in transition to their advantage, scoring the first two goals of the quarter to build a 6-3 lead with 3:51 remaining in the first half. Much like the opening quarter, the three-goal cushion was short-lived, as Johns Hopkins scored the final two goals of the half to trim its deficit to one heading into the break.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the second half, evening things up at 6-6. A little over a minute later, Stony Brook was able to retake the lead courtesy of a goal from Fusco. The increased offensive pace would continue, with each team adding a goal over the next few minutes, while the Seawolves still led by a score of 8-7. The lead then increased to four after the Seawolves scored the next three goals to go ahead 11-7. This Stony Brook run was met with two straight goals by Johns Hopkins to close out the third quarter.
Those two goals helped spark the Blue Jays' attack as they fired in two out of the first three goals to begin the fourth quarter, cutting the Seawolf lead to 12-11 with 11:03 remaining. Johns Hopkins then scored the final two goals, including the game-winner in the closing moments, to secure a 13-12 win over Stony Brook in the quarterfinals.
