Morgan Sweany posted a match-high 15 kills and Sarah Votruba chipped in with 13 as the Stony Brook volleyball team topped St. Francis (Pa.) 3-1 (29-31, 30-18, 30-23, 30-23) in match 4 of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at the Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday morning. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 2-4 on the season, while the Red Flash fell to 1-5.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 15-7 lead early in Game 1 but the Red Flash would not go away, using an 11-3 run to tie the game at 18. Stony Brook regained the lead and had two game points, but SFU took advantage of an SB error to tie it at 29 all. Missi Vaughn closed it out for the visitors with a kill and a service ace to give SFU the 31-29 victory.
The Seawolves cruised in Game 2, leading by as many as seven at 22-15 before Gulce Nazli Dikecligil served six straight points to give SB the 30-18 win.
Stony Brook took advantage of 11 errors by SFU in Game 3 while Sweany led the Seawolves attack with seven kills en route to a 30-23 win.
Tied 7-7 early in the fourth game, the Seawolves pulled away to earn the 30-23 victory. Amy Oleksiej and Votruba led SB with three kills apiece.
Kate Ruskowski dished out 40 assists while Claire Lindner added a match-high 20 digs in the victory. Anne Roosevelt led the Red Flash with 14 kills and 17 digs.
In the first match of the day, Siena (4-4) earned a 3-1 (20-28, 30-17, 24-30, 30-19) victory over Bucknell behind 14 kills by Liz Hubbard and 12 from Christie Gustafson. Jennie Smith tallied 14 kills for the Bison (4-2) in the loss.
The Seawolves return to action when they take on Bucknell in the final match of the day at approximately 3:00 p.m.
